Upper Ridge Residence
New Jersey

Residential living is reinterpreted through a hospitality lens – where experience determines how spaces unfold, how they are used, and how they are felt over time.

The plan is conceived as a sequence rather than a singular open volume. Movement through the home is intentional – spaces reveal themselves gradually, creating moments of arrival, pause, and transition that mirror the pacing of a hospitality environment.

Material selection reinforces this approach. A continuous wood floor establishes a calm, unified ground plane, while brick, stone, and dark metal introduce contrast and permanence. Lighter wood tones are balanced by deeper cabinetry and stone surfaces, creating depth without disrupting the overall sense of ease.

Designed for Flow, Light & Connection

The kitchen and bar are approached through both restaurant and hotel design principles – prioritizing flow, adjacency, and experience. A long kitchen island anchors the space, functioning as both prep surface and gathering point, positioned to encourage interaction across adjacent living areas. The bar is integrated directly into the architecture, with shelving, storage, and display resolved as a continuous composition. Large expanses of glazing are positioned with precision, framing the surrounding landscape while drawing natural light deep into the interior. Overhead, exposed wood beams introduce structure and scale, reinforcing the architecture while adding warmth to the volume of space. Circulation is treated as an experiential element. The stair becomes a focal point – wrapped in brick and defined by a linear light feature – establishing a clear vertical connection while anchoring the plan visually.

Private Retreats & Seamless Outdoor Living

Private spaces shift in tone, becoming quieter and more restrained. Bedrooms are intentionally minimal, allowing proportion and light to take precedence. Bathrooms take on more spa-like quality – clean-lined and materially focused – where contrast is introduced through tile and stone within a controlled palette. The design extends outward to a covered patio and outdoor kitchen, where cooking, dining, and gathering continue seamlessly beyond the interior – supporting the same patterns of use across both environments. Rather than separating architecture, interior, and program, the design brings them into alignment – resulting in a residence shaped by the same principles that underpin hospitality environments at their most considered – where planning, material, and use function as one.
