Laconia Country Club
Laconia, NH

A reorientation of space, sightline, and experience transforms the clubhouse at Laconia Country Club – shifting from a series of inward-facing rooms into a cohesive, light-filled environment connected to the golf course beyond.

From the moment of entry, a clear visual axis draws guests through the space, connecting the lobby, bar, dining areas, and enclosed porch into a continuous flow. What was once fragmented now unfolds as a sequence – each space linked visually and experientially, guiding movement naturally outward through the clubhouse.

Arrival is intentionally redefined. Rather than allowing the eye to drop toward the existing stair, a vertical accent wall establishes a strong focal point – visually grounding the space and directing attention forward. This subtle intervention creates clarity and orientation, reshaping the first impression without altering the underlying structure.

A Cohesive Architectural Transformation Defined by Rhythm, Flow, and Connection

A defining architectural move is the reworking of the existing ceiling soffits – introducing linear wood slats to create a layered system that brings rhythm, warmth, and structure to the interior. The slats are aligned to reinforce directionality – visually extending the space and supporting the overall flow, replacing previously inconsistent ceiling conditions with a cohesive and continuous architectural expression. The bar, fixed in its original location, is redefined through its integration with the surrounding space. Rather than reading as an isolated element, it is visually tied into the broader composition through material continuity and clearer sightlines. Circulation and seating are organized around it in a way that supports flow while maintaining its presence as a central point within the room. The most significant shift occurs at the perimeter. What was once a visually disconnected porch – defined by low ceilings, heavy framing, and a limited relationship to the interior – is opened and restructured to operate as part of the main space. Openings are enlarged and aligned, ceiling conditions are carried through, and the visual boundary between inside and out is reduced to a thin threshold.

A Seamless Extension Shaped by Purpose and Spatial Clarity

As a result, the porch no longer reads as an addition – it becomes the natural extension of the room. The golf course is pulled closer, remaining present from nearly every vantage point, while the interior gains depth and direction through that connection. In the dining areas, wood wall paneling is introduced with purpose. Beyond its visual consistency, it absorbs sound within high-activity zones, allowing the space to remain comfortable and controlled even at full occupancy. Nothing is added without reason. Each move addresses a specific condition – redirecting focus, removing visual conflict, or reinforcing alignment – until the space reads clearly as a single, continuous environment.

A sculptural canopy of more than 2,200 suspended glass pieces defines the space – transforming the lobby into a luminous gathering environment shaped by light, reflection, and local narrative.   Designed as a modern living room for extended stay travel, the lobby centers around a dramatic ceiling installation composed of translucent artisan glass in tones of stone, bronze, navy blue, and pale gray. Suspended above the bar, the installation forms a layered geometric topography that captures and refracts light throughout the space. Its presence shifts throughout the day, creating a constantly changing atmosphere across the interior.   The composition draws quiet inspiration from Needham’s iconic Blue Tree Lighting tradition, when thousands of blue lights illuminate the town common each winter, gathering the community beneath a glowing canopy – an idea translated here through form, light, and repetition.

A prototype-driven renovation and brand conversion that repositions the property – bringing clarity, openness, and a more contemporary identity aligned with Holiday Inn by IHG.   The shift is immediate. This hospitality design transforms a previously dense and segmented layout into a space that feels lighter, more fluid, and intuitively organized – replacing visual fragmentation with a clear, readable structure across the public areas.   Arrival unfolds as a sequence rather than a single point. Check-in is broken into individual stations, softening the interaction and allowing the guest experience to feel more natural and less transactional. A diagonal slat feature wall moves across the lobby with intention, introducing rhythm and direction while visually organizing the openness around it.
