Homewood Suites by Hilton
Burlington, VT

There’s a distinct stillness to Burlington – where landscape, light, and seasonality shape how space is experienced. As the brand’s first property in Vermont, this Homewood Suites draws from that context, creating a hospitality environment that feels grounded, warm, and quietly refined.

At the center of the space, a double-sided stone fireplace establishes both structure and atmosphere. It connects the lobby and lodge-style breakfast area seamlessly – less a divider, more a shared moment. Guests move around it naturally, gathering, passing through, or settling in as the space shifts from arrival to lingering, anchoring the overall experience.

Overhead, a sculptural canopy of branching light, locally fabricated in Vermont by skilled artisans, spans the two-story lodge and defines the volume of the space. Its presence is echoed underfoot, where the custom carpet captures the shadow of branches in a large-scale pattern – creating a layered relationship between light, form, and surface that subtly references the surrounding forested landscape.

Layered Materiality and Precise Alignment Defining a Composed Hospitality Experience

Materiality is layered and intentional. Stone, warm wood tones, and soft textiles work together to create depth through tonal variation rather than contrast, allowing the hotel interiors to feel cohesive and composed. This interplay of light and shadow continues throughout the public areas, guiding the transition from the central lodge to more intimate spaces beyond. Guest suites are defined by precise alignment and clean composition. The headboard accent wall is detailed as a panelized backdrop, with vertical elements aligning seamlessly with the nightstands and table lamps to create a continuous, integrated focal point within the guestroom design. This approach carries throughout the room – millwork, lighting, and furnishings are positioned with intention, reinforcing clear sightlines and a sense of order. A custom carpet pattern introduces movement through layered linear bands and carved, undulating textures, adding depth while maintaining the calm, cohesive palette. Rather than relying on contrast or ornament, the design is defined by control – of alignment, of material, and of how light moves across each surface. The result is a hospitality environment that feels composed, immersive, and distinctly tied to its setting.

Material, texture, and performance shape the experience at Fairfield Inn & Suites Waterbury – where a departure from prototype becomes an opportunity to root the brand in place. Recognized with the 2016 CID Award for Sustainable Commercial Design for our innovative and performance – driven use of tile and stone, the project reinterprets a standardized model through a distinctly Vermont lens.   Developed as a new construction property, the design represents one of the first custom Fairfield Inn interiors approved nationally – challenging a brightly colored, standardized prototype that did not reflect the character of the Waterbury and Stowe ski region. Rather than applying surface-level adjustments, the approach rethinks the brand through materiality and atmosphere while maintaining core brand elements.

A double-height volume anchored by stone and light sets the tone immediately – where a grounded fireplace rises through the space and a wash of blue underfoot moves like a landscape, establishing an environment that feels both open and quietly expressive within the Fairfield Inn & Suites Gen 4 prototype.   This hotel renovation and brand conversion reworks an existing structure not through bold intervention, but through clarity and atmosphere – opening the space, softening transitions, and allowing a few key elements to define the experience.
