Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott
Waterbury, VT

Material, texture, and performance shape the experience at Fairfield Inn & Suites Waterbury – where a departure from prototype becomes an opportunity to root the brand in place. Recognized with the 2016 CID Award for Sustainable Commercial Design for our innovative and performance – driven use of tile and stone, the project reinterprets a standardized model through a distinctly Vermont lens.

Developed as a new construction property, the design represents one of the first custom Fairfield Inn interiors approved nationally – challenging a brightly colored, standardized prototype that did not reflect the character of the Waterbury and Stowe ski region. Rather than applying surface-level adjustments, the approach rethinks the brand through materiality and atmosphere while maintaining core brand elements.

A Grounded, Regionally Inspired Interior Balancing Rustic Character and Contemporary Clarity

A full-height stone fireplace grounds the lobby, creating a central point of orientation within the open plan. Seating zones unfold through shifts in material and pattern rather than enclosure - maintaining openness while clearly articulating space. Reclaimed wood elements, including a communal farm table and Connect & Print desk crafted by local artisans, introduce tactile richness, balanced by refined metal detailing and tailored upholstery. The breakfast area continues this dialogue between rustic influence and contemporary clarity. Communal and individual seating provide flexibility, while barn-inspired references and solid stone buffet counters offer a subtle, contextual and familiar nod to Vermont’s agricultural vernacular.

Grounded in Material, Defined by Experience

Arrival is anchored by a sculptural composition of a burnished metal ring chandelier set against a richly toned reclaimed wood ceiling, establishing warmth, scale and rhythm. Lighting enhances depth and material variation, transforming durable finishes into an experiential environment. Wood-look porcelain plank flooring extends throughout the public spaces, its varied directional installation introduces movement while responding to the demands of seasonal wear. Guest rooms transition to a quieter, more controlled expression aligned with Fairfield brand standards. A neutral palette of soft grays and warm wood tones is paired with a textured headboard wall that introduces depth and continuity with the material language of the public spaces. Clean lines and thoughtful planning create a calm and restorative environment for both business and leisure travelers. At its core, the project reflects a shift in how brand standards can be interpreted – where material authenticity, regional influence, and disciplined design come together to create a hospitality experience that feels both grounded and distinctly its own.
