Elmwood Residence
New Hampshire

Elmwood Residence is a custom single-family home in New Hampshire, set within six acres of wooded landscape and designed as a modern farmhouse retreat. This residential interior design project balances strong architectural structure with refined interior detailing, bringing a hospitality-driven approach to everyday living through clarity, material cohesion, and a seamless connection to its natural surroundings.

Arrival & Spatial Flow

A double-height open stair at the entry creates a dramatic arrival, where vertical volume and natural light establish an immediate sense of scale and openness. From this entry sequence, the home transitions into a series of interconnected living spaces that feel expansive yet grounded, shaped by clean lines and a restrained material palette. The main living area is defined by a rhythmic timber ceiling, stacked stone elements, and integrated architectural millwork. A large span of windows draws the eye outward, framing views of the pool and surrounding woods while filling the interior with natural light. This continuous visual connection to the landscape reinforces the relationship between interior design and the natural setting. The kitchen is designed as both a functional workspace and a central gathering space within the open-plan layout. Clean-lined cabinetry, integrated appliances, and a layered mix of wood and stone create a cohesive composition that aligns with the home’s architectural language. The open connection between kitchen, dining, and living areas supports both everyday living and entertaining.

Material Narrative & Landscape Connection

In the primary bathroom, the material palette shifts toward a more serene, spa-like environment. Full-height stone surfaces, a freestanding soaking tub positioned at the window, and a symmetrical double vanity create a balanced and calming composition. Natural light and carefully integrated detailing enhance the sense of quiet luxury within the space. Throughout the home, materials are intentionally limited and consistently applied—warm wood, natural stone, and soft tonal finishes working together to create depth through texture rather than contrast. Light is treated as a key design element, moving across surfaces and subtly transforming each interior space throughout the day. Though privately set within a wooded site, the property maintains a connection to the nearby bay, accessed by a walking path that extends the experience of the home beyond the interior. Seasonal changes further shape the character of the residence, from snow-covered winter landscapes to dense greenery and filtered light in warmer months. Elmwood Residence represents a modern farmhouse in New Hampshire that is architecturally grounded, highly livable, and thoughtfully designed to connect interior spaces with the surrounding landscape.

Designed within a compact New York City footprint, this project transforms constraint into precision – distilling the restaurant experience into an efficient, highly focused environment defined by material, light, and movement.   At the street, the storefront establishes a distinct identity through dimensional glass that fragments and layers views into the interior. Rather than offering a direct reveal, the façade filters movement, light, and activity – creating a shifting, atmospheric threshold and a dynamic edge between the city and the space within.

The design begins with a story – one that was already here, rooted in place, carried forward through material, and reinterpreted through interior form.   At the center of that story is the “Harmony Tree,” a maple long known to the community and once located on this site. Its presence is carried forward overhead – reclaimed wood slabs from the tree are integrated into the ceiling at reception, creating a direct material connection to what once stood here.   A monolithic front desk of Belgian bluestone establishes a contrasting counterpoint – grounded, weighty, and precise – anchoring the point of arrival with a sense of permanence. Behind it, a custom wallcovering and integrated open shelving form a continuous backdrop. The composition draws from Diana’s Baths, a nearby series of cascading waterfalls in the White Mountains, translating that movement into an abstract, textural field. Shelving is set directly in front of this surface, displaying a curated mix of local objects, vintage finds, and books sourced from nearby shops, including titles specific to the history of Intervale – bringing the narrative of place into direct view.
